1. What is EBIXA® and what is it used for?
EBIXA® is a long white, dirty white, two-sided film tablets. It is presented to the market in blister packages of 100 film tablets.
EBIXA® is a group of drugs used against dementia.
Memory loss in Alzheimer's disease is caused by impaired message signals in the brain. In the brain, there are formations called NMDA-receptors. These formations play a role in the nerve stimulation, which is important for learning and remembering. EBIXA® belongs to a group of drugs called NMDA receptor antagonists and acts on NMDA receptors to improve nerve stimulation and memory. Due to this effect, EBIXA® is used in the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.

2. Things to watch out for before using EBIXA®
Before using EBIXA®, please read the following sections and it is important that you consult with your doctor if there is any problem. Your caregiver can ask you for help with your doctor.
DO NOT USE EBIXA® in the following situations
Do not use this medicine if you have allergies (hypersensitivity) to memantine hydrochloride or any of the formulated adjuvants.
Use EBIXA® CAREFULLY in the following situations
If;
• If you have epileptic seizure history,
• If you have recently had a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or
congestive heart failure or uncontrolled hypertension
If you have a complaint.
In these cases, the treatment should be carefully controlled and the clinical benefit of EBIXA® reviewed regularly by your doctor.
If you have kidney failure, your doctor should closely monitor your kidney function and, if necessary, adjust the dose of memantine accordingly.
Use with amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan and other NMDA-antagonists should be avoided at the same time.
Please consult your doctor if these warnings apply to you, even at any time in the past.
EBIXA® is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
Use of EBIXA® with food and beverages
If you have recently changed your diet or are planning to change it (such as switching from a strict vegetarian diet in a normal diet) or renal tubular acidosis (RTA, a surplus of acid builder due to renal dysfunction), or if you have a severe urinary tract infection, you should inform your doctor. Because the dosage of your medicine may need to be adjusted.
Pregnancy
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor. The use of memantine in pregnant women is not recommended.

Breast-feeding

Mothers using EBIXA® should not breastfeed.
Vehicle and machine use
Your doctor will tell you whether you can use a car or a machine.

Important information about some auxiliary substances contained in EBIXA®
The formula for this drug is lactose. If you have previously been told by your doctor that you have intolerance to certain sugars, you should consult your doctor before using EBIXA®.
Use with other medicines
In particular the effects of the following medicines may vary with EBIXA® and may need to be adjusted by your doctor:
• amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan
Dantrolene, baclofen
• cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, nicotine
• hydrochlorothiazide (or any combination with hydrochlorothiazide)
• anticholinergics (substances commonly used to treat movement disorders or bowel cramps)
• anticonvulsants (substances used to prevent and alleviate seizures)
• barbiturates (substances commonly used for sleep)
• dopamine agonists (such as L-dopa, bromocriptine)
• neuroleptics (substances used in the treatment of mental disorders)
• oral anticoagulants
If you go to the hospital, inform your doctor that you are using EBIXA®.
If you are currently using or have used a prescription or over-the-counter medication, please tell your doctor or pharmacist about them.

3. How to use EBIXA®
Instructions for proper use and dose / application frequency:
Always take EBIXA® as recommended by your doctor. You need to take your medicine regularly and at the same time every day so that you can take advantage of your health. When you are not sure, your doctor or pharmacist is ok.
Dose:
Recommended for adults and elderly, EBIXA® is 20 mg once daily (1 x 2 tablets). To reduce the risk of side effects, this dose is achieved by progressively increasing the following daily treatment schedule:
1 week
half tablet
2 weeks
1 tablet
Three weeks
1½ tablet
Week 4 and after
2 tablets
Treatment is started with a daily dose of 5 mg, ie half a tablet (½ tablet) and continued for one week. The second week is used at 10 mg (one tablet once daily) and the third week is 15 mg (one and a half tablets once daily).
From the fourth week onwards, the treatment is continued with the recommended dose of 20 mg once daily (2 tablets once a day).
Dose in patients with renal insufficiency:
If you have kidney failure, your doctor will decide a proper dose. In this case, your kidney function should be monitored at regular intervals by your doctor.
Application path:
EBIXA® should be taken orally once a day. Drink the tablets with some water. Tablets can be taken as food or as food.
Treatment time:
Continue to take EBIXA® as long as it is available to you and unless there are any adverse effects that can not be tolerated. Your treatment should be assessed regularly by your doctor.

4. What are the possible side effects?

Headache, drowsiness, constipation, dizziness and high blood pressure.
Uncommon (at least 1 in 1000 people):
Fatigue, fungal infections, confusion, hallucinations, vomiting, gait abnormality, and venous blood clotting (thrombosis / thromboembolism).

Seizures.

Pancreatitis and psychotic reactions
