FAMVIR is an antiviral drug used in the treatment of many viral infections described below. It stops the reproduction of the infected virus. Since the virus reproduces very early in the infection, the best result will be obtained by starting FAMVIR as soon as possible after the first symptoms appear.

FAMVIR is used in the treatment of herpes zoster (Shingles). Herpes zoster is an infection caused by a virus called Varicella zoster (the same virus that causes chickenpox). FAMVIR stops the virus from spreading throughout the body, so recovery occurs faster. Same

It also reduces the pain that can sometimes occur after the blisters and rash have healed.

FAMVIR is also used in the treatment of acute (newer) and recurrent genital (reproductive) herpes and in the suppression of recurrent genital herpes infections in adults. Genital herpes is a viral infection caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2 and normally spread by sexual contact. It causes blisters and burning or itching in the genital organs that can be painful. People who have frequent genital herpes infections can use FAMVIR to help stop these attacks.

Although FAMVIR does not cure viral infection, it helps shorten the duration of symptoms and allows the infection to heal faster.

Using FAMVIR will not prevent you from transmitting the herpes virus to others.

If you have questions about how FAMVIR works or why it has been prescribed for you, consult your doctor.
