What is Cholesterol and what is it used for?

Colestyramine, the active ingredient of CHOLESTRAN, is not absorbed by the body. Cholestyramine acts on the intestines by binding to bile acids produced by the liver and allows the bile acids to be excreted from the body by carrying the feces. Thus, it prevents the body from regaining the normal bile acids from the intestines. Without this recovery procedure, the liver has to produce additional bile acid. For this purpose, the liver uses the cholesterol in the blood and thus the level of cholesterol in the blood decreases.

KOLESTRAN is available in 9 g Al / PE / PET bags, 30 and 60 bags.

CHOLESTRAN is used to lower the high levels of cholesterol (a type of fat) in the blood. Thus, it is also used to reduce the frequency of atherosclerotic coronary heart failure (narrowing of the heart vessels due to atherosclerosis) and myocardial infarction (heart attack).

KOLESTRAN, diet therapy, weight control, physical exercise, etc. When non-drug treatment methods such as are not sufficient, they are added to the treatment and other methods are continued.

In addition to KOLESTRAN diet;

- in patients with primary hypercholesterolaemia (elevated cholesterol level in the blood) in combination with statin in cases where statin use alone does not provide adequate control.

- It is used in patients with inherited hypercholesterolaemia with different genes for whom statin therapy is not suitable.

KOLESTRAN is also used in the treatment of diarrhea caused by bile acids and itching caused by partial obstruction of the bile duct.
3.How to use KOLESTRAN?
Instructions for proper use and dose / frequency of administration

Always use CHOLESTRAN exactly as directed by your doctor. If you are not sure, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Cholesterol-lowering diet should be started before starting treatment with CHOLESTRAN and this diet should be continued during the treatment.

In order to determine the treatment plan and strategy for the patients individually, the doctor who will start the treatment should determine your blood lipid values by referring to the current guidelines. During the treatment, blood lipid values should be checked at regular intervals.

If you are taking any other medication with KOLESTRAN, your doctor will ask you to take your other medicines 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after KOLESTRAN. CHOLESTRAN must be taken orally with food and with liquid.

Adults Combined therapy

If CHOLESTRAN is used with a statin, see the statin package leaflet to determine the appropriate statin dose. You can take both drugs either together or at different times, as your doctor has advised you.

One dose for adults is 1-4 sachets (equivalent to 4-16 g cholestyramine). The daily dose can be divided into several doses. If deemed necessary, the daily dose can be increased to a maximum of 6 sachets (equivalent to 24 g of colestyramine).

Monotherapy (single drug therapy)

One dose for adults is 1-4 sachets (equivalent to 4-16 g cholestyramine). The daily dose can be divided into several doses. If necessary, the daily dose can be increased to a maximum of 6 sachets (equivalent to 24 g of colestyramine).

The treatment should always be started at the appropriate dose in order to avoid or keep it at low levels from gastrointestinal system side effects. If deemed necessary, blood lipid values should be monitored regularly during the treatment period and the dose should be increased gradually. Colestyramine doses above 24 g per day may possibly disrupt the normal fat intake.

In the treatment of diarrhea caused by bile salts (collagenic diarrhea), the starting dose is 1 sachet 3 times a day. If necessary, subsequent doses are determined.

In the treatment of itching and jaundice caused by partial bile duct obstruction, 1-2 sachets per day are sufficient (equivalent to 4-8 g cholestyramine daily).
