1. What PLAQUENIL is and what it is used for

PLAQUENIL tablet is taken orally. A box of your medicine contains 30 film-coated tablets, each containing 200 mg of hydroxychloroquine sulfate.

Your doctor has prescribed PLAQUENIL for the treatment of any of the following conditions:

    Rheumatoid arthritis (a persistent disease that causes pain and deformity in the joints)
    Discoid and systemic lupus erythematosus (a disease manifested by scaling on the whole body or on the skin, when systemic, it has symptoms such as fever, weakness, joint pains.)
    Photosensitive skin eruptions (red skin lesions that appear suddenly on the skin)
    Suppression and treatment of acute attacks of malaria (malaria)

2. How to use PLAQUENIL?

Instructions for proper use and dose/frequency of administration

Rheumatoid arthritis (a persistent disease that causes pain and disfigurement in the joints): In adults:

2-3 tablets per day are used in the treatment of attacks.

1-2 tablets per day are used in maintenance therapy.

Discoid and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (a disease manifested by scaling on the whole body or on the skin):

Initially, 1-2 tablets per day (200-400 mg/day) are used until the lesions disappear. In cases where there is no response after 12 months of treatment, the dose may be increased to 3 tablets per day (600 mg/day).

The dose is then reduced to 100 mg per day and treatment is continued for several months. In the following weeks, the treatment is continued for years at a dose of 200-300 mg.

Maintenance therapy should be continued at the lowest effective dose and should not exceed 7 mg/kg per day.
Photosensitive skin eruptions (red skin lesions that appear suddenly on the skin):

2-3 tablets (400-600 mg) are used per day. It starts 7 days before sun exposure and continues for 15 days after sun exposure.

Malaria (Malaria):

Adults: It is used on the same day of each week with a dose of 400 mg.

If possible, suppression therapy should be started two weeks before exposure. If this cannot be achieved, a loading dose of 800 mg for adults and 10 mg/kg for children can be administered in two divided doses 6 hours apart. Suppression therapy should be continued for eight weeks after leaving the endemic area.

Treatment of Acute Attacks

Adults: Start with a first dose of 800 mg, followed by 400 mg 6-8 hours later, followed by 400 mg/day for the next 2 days (total of 2 g). Alternatively, a single 800 mg dose has proven to be effective. In adults, the dose can be adjusted according to body weight, as in adolescents and children. It is administered at a total of 25 mg/kg body weight for three days as follows:

Initial dose: 10 mg/kg (but not to exceed 800 mg dose)

Second dose: 5 mg/kg (but not to exceed 400 mg dose) 6 hours after first dose Third dose: 5 mg/kg, 18 hours after second dose Fourth dose: 5 mg/kg, 24 hours after third dose

3. What are the possible side effects?

Like all medicines, there may be side effects in people who are sensitive to the substances contained in PLAQUENIL.

If any of the following occur, stop using PLAQUENIL and IMMEDIATELY inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency department:
Retinopathy (a disease seen in the retina of the eye that can cause visual impairment): It is reversible with discontinuation of treatment in the initial stages. However, as the condition progresses, there may be a risk that it will continue to progress after discontinuation of treatment.
Comeal changes: Blurred vision, sensitivity to light
Inflammation with swelling and redness on the skin and around the eyes (erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome),
Generalized redness and scaling of the skin due to an existing skin disease, medication, malignancy, or unknown cause
Swelling of the face and throat as a result of allergy, rash, narrowing of the bronchi, spasm of the bronchi

These are all very serious side effects.

If you have any of these, you have a serious allergy to PLAQUENIL. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalization.

If you notice any of the following, tell your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital emergency department:
Psychosis (a type of mental disorder) and seizure
