• Empagliflozin works by blocking a protein called “sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2)” in the kidneys. SGLT2 prevents glucose from being excreted in the urine by allowing glucose to be reabsorbed into the bloodstream during filtration of the blood through the kidneys. The drug blocks this protein, allowing blood sugar, sodium (salt) and water to be excreted in the urine. This lowers your blood sugar levels, which are too high because of your Type 2 diabetes.
